Mallory Square Dock is on the west edge of Old Town beside Mallory Square. Passengers emerge near the lower end of Duval Street, the Key West Aquarium, Front Street and the historic waterfront. This is the most immediately walkable location. Mallory’s city schedule should be checked for current calls; do not assume every large ship can or will use it.

Pier B is the privately operated pier at the Opal Key Resort & Marina waterfront, just south of Mallory Square and still directly beside Old Town. Duval Street, Front Street and Truman-era sites are accessible on foot. Follow the signed route through the resort and security area when returning.

The Navy Mole, also called the Outer Mole, projects from the Truman Annex waterfront southwest of Old Town. It is within a controlled facility, so cruise passengers normally use the authorized shuttle between the ship and a designated Old Town drop-off. You cannot simply wander through the secure property. Ask where the return shuttle boards, how frequently it runs and when the final shuttle leaves. Reaching the drop-off by all-aboard time is too late if a shuttle ride and security remain.

If the Southernmost Point buoy is important, go there first by taxi, bicycle taxi or trolley and walk back north. Lines for a photo can be long, and the marker is at the opposite end of Duval from the cruise waterfront. It is a photo stop, not a reason to sacrifice the ship buffer.

From the Navy Mole, the same route works after the authorized shuttle, but reduce the sightseeing block to protect the shuttle return.

A Balanced 6-Hour Key West Plan

Six usable hours can combine Old Town with one distinct experience:

• History plus beach: explore one Old Town museum in the morning, then ride to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park for the fort, lunch and a swim before returning.
• Old Town plus marine life: take a cruise-compatible snorkeling, dolphin-watching or glass-bottom excursion, then use the remaining time near Mallory Square and Duval Street.
• Architecture and gardens: connect the historic seaport, a house museum, the lighthouse district and the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory at a measured pace.

Book independent boat trips only when the operator’s dock, check-in and scheduled return are compatible with your actual pier. “Returns at 2:30” is incomplete information if ground transport and Navy security still stand between you and the ship.

An 8-Hour Key West Plan

With eight usable hours, a half-day water activity plus an unhurried Old Town visit works well. A morning reef trip can be followed by lunch, one museum and a slow walk back through the historic district. Alternatively, pair Fort Zachary Taylor with the Truman sites and Mallory Square.

Dry Tortugas National Park is not a normal cruise-call add-on. The park lies almost 70 miles west of Key West and is accessible only by boat or seaplane. The National Park Service describes the concession ferry as a full day with about 4.5 hours at Garden Key; its fixed departure and return generally conflict with a ship’s independent port window. A half-day seaplane excursion is shorter but still weather-dependent and must fit the call with a very large margin. Consider Dry Tortugas only if the cruise line offers a protected excursion or if a vetted operator confirms times that unmistakably fit your ship. For most cruise passengers, save it for a land stay.

Old Town Geography Without the Backtracking

Duval Street runs roughly northeast–southwest across Old Town. The cruise waterfront and Mallory Square sit near its northwestern end; the Southernmost Point and South Beach are near the opposite end. Whitehead Street parallels Duval and holds several major historic attractions. The Historic Seaport is northeast of Mallory around the Key West Bight.

A practical walking route uses Whitehead in one direction and Duval in the other. Do not zigzag between isolated attractions. Key West blocks are short, but heat and humidity accumulate, and many historic buildings have stairs or tight interiors.

Which Key West Beach Fits a Cruise Day?

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is the best beach-and-history combination near Old Town. Water shoes are recommended, there is no lifeguard, and the fort closes earlier than the overall park. It is close on a map to the Truman waterfront but inside a separately controlled state park; use the public entrance and do not assume a shortcut from the Navy Mole.

Bicycles are popular because Key West is compact and mostly level. They are best for confident riders accustomed to traffic, pedestrians and frequent intersections.
