Virgin Voyages: Adults-Only Cruising and What's Actually Included
An honest look at Virgin Voyages: what the fare covers and who the line suits.
Virgin Voyages launched in 2020 with Scarlet Lady and a specific pitch: a cruise line built for adults, with the parts of mainstream cruising people complain about stripped out. Four ships later, it has mostly delivered on that. The interiors look more like a boutique hotel than a cruise ship, there are no children aboard, and there is no buffet anywhere.
What the fare covers
Included in every fare:
- Meals at all 20-plus eateries onboard, with no specialty restaurant surcharges. The Wake, Pink Agave, Gunbae, Extra Virgin, Razzle Dazzle and The Test Kitchen are all covered, though the popular ones need reservations.
- Soft drinks, drip coffee, tea, still and sparkling water, and non-pressed juices.
- Basic Wi-Fi.
- Group fitness classes.
- Headline entertainment.
Not included:
- Alcohol. You either pay per drink or pre-purchase a Bar Tab, which works like onboard credit that only applies to drinks. Virgin adds a bonus when you pre-load it — the amounts shift with promotions, but a $200 Bar Tab has recently carried a $25 bonus and $1,000 has carried $250. If you drink at all, budget for this as its own line.
- Specialty coffee, fresh-pressed juice and smoothies.
- Premium Wi-Fi for streaming.
- Spa treatments, shore excursions, laundry, and a small number of premium events.
- Gratuities
The three fare tiers
You choose between three fare types:
Base is cheapest and most restrictive. Non-refundable, no date or name changes, basic Wi-Fi on one device, and dining reservations do not open until 15 days before you sail.
Essential adds standard change policies, cabin changes, and dining reservations at 45 days.
Premium gives you dining reservations at 60 days, Wi-Fi on two devices, all name changes permitted, a priority support line, and a $15 daily Bar Tab per sailor. If you drink, that Bar Tab often covers most of the price difference by itself.
RockStar and Mega RockStar suites keep full flexibility and book dining at 120 days.
Those reservation windows matter more than they sound like they should. The Test Kitchen and Gunbae fill quickly, and a Base fare booked close to sailing can leave you eating at the food hall more often than you intended.
Adults only
Every guest is 18 or older. No exceptions, no kids' club, no connecting family cabins. That single rule shapes everything downstream: entertainment is programmed for grown-ups, the pool deck stays calm in the middle of the afternoon, and the restaurants are quieter than their mainstream equivalents.
The crowd skews younger than a typical cruise. Plenty of thirties and forties, a solid contingent in their fifties and sixties, and noticeably more solo travelers and groups of friends than you would find on a mainstream line. It is a social ship. You can absolutely have a quiet week on it, but you will be going against the grain.
The ships
Four, all built by Fincantieri in Italy and near-identical in layout: Scarlet Lady (2020), Valiant Lady (2021), Resilient Lady (2022) and Brilliant Lady (2025). Each carries about 2,760 guests, which puts them squarely mid-size — much smaller than an Icon-class Royal Caribbean ship, much larger than a luxury line like Regent or Oceania.
The design is what people notice first. The interiors run darker and more textured than the beige-and-brass palette most lines default to, with terrazzo, brass and a lot of red. Around 86% of cabins have a balcony, and those balconies have hammocks, a small detail guests mention far more often than you would expect.
Dining
No main dining room, no assigned seating, no buffet. There are six sit-down restaurants plus a food hall called The Galley and a handful of casual spots, and you decide each evening where to eat.
The six are The Wake for steak and seafood, Pink Agave for Mexican, Extra Virgin for Italian, Gunbae for Korean barbecue with grills built into the tables, The Test Kitchen for a seasonal tasting menu that is the most ambitious cooking onboard, and Razzle Dazzle, which changes by ship — Lucky Lotus on Scarlet Lady, Ariya on Valiant Lady, Rojo on Brilliant Lady.
Gunbae seats you at a shared table and hands the group a grill, which sounds like an ordeal and usually is not. On a seven-night sailing you can eat somewhere different most nights without repeating.
Where they sail in 2026
Wider ground than the line covered in its early years.
- Scarlet Lady runs short Miami sailings to Key West and Bimini through the winter, then crosses to the Mediterranean in May for seven- to twelve-night itineraries out of Athens, Barcelona and Rome.
- Resilient Lady sails mostly seven-night Caribbean itineraries from Miami, calling at ports including Amber Cove, San Juan, Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman.
- Brilliant Lady opened Virgin's first Alaska season from Seattle in May. Seventeen itineraries run through September, with Ketchikan, Sitka and Prince Rupert on the most common route. Then she will head back to Los Angeles for a short season before returning to Florida.
Most Caribbean sailings include the Beach Club at Bimini, Virgin's own beach day in the Bahamas. It is one of the better private destinations at sea: six bars, a pool with a DJ, and your Bar Tab works ashore. Because it is built for one Virgin ship rather than three mega-ships, it never feels like a queue.
Who should look elsewhere
Families with children, for the obvious reason. Beyond that: anyone who wants a genuinely single all-in price with no further decisions, anyone whose ideal evening is a production show and a formal night, and anyone who would be irritated to discover at the first bar that drinks are extra.
On cost, Virgin generally lands between mainstream and premium. Compare it properly rather than on sticker price. Take the Virgin fare plus gratuities plus a realistic Bar Tab, and set that against a mainstream fare plus its gratuities, drink package and specialty dining. Virgin often comes out ahead, but not always, and by a narrower margin than before the October 2025 changes.
