Ben’s Favorite Locally Owned Galveston Restaurants

Galveston has far more to offer than cruise-terminal restaurants and tourist traps. I'm Ben, the owner of Ben's Travel, and I'm from Galveston. These are the locally owned restaurants I send friends and travelers to when they want a real island meal before or after a cruise.

From an easy breakfast to an occasion-worthy dinner, there is something here for every kind of traveler. Check current hours, reservations, and wait times before you go—especially on weekends, holidays, and cruise embarkation days.

Breakfast, Brunch, and Coffee

• The Sunflower Bakery & Cafe is a longtime go-to for a relaxed breakfast or lunch, with bakery treats that are worth saving room for.

• ShyKatz is another easy choice for breakfast, brunch, and a casual café meal.

• MOD Coffeehouse is my pick when you need excellent coffee and a pause while exploring downtown and The Strand.

Seafood and Gulf Coast Favorites

• Little Daddy's Gumbo Bar is a natural stop when you want a bowl of gumbo and a laid-back meal downtown.

• Katie's Seafood House is a strong choice for seafood in a working-waterfront setting.

• BLVD. Seafood is a polished Seawall option for seafood and dinner with a more elevated feel.

• Shrimp 'N Stuff is one of my personal go-tos for fried seafood. This unassuming spot in the middle of a residential area proves you do not need a fancy dining room to get great food. The Antonelli family owns the restaurant, and a fun local connection: the owner was my Scout leader.

Casual Island Favorites

• The Spot is an easy, casual choice when you want a relaxed beachside meal with a lively island atmosphere.

• Cajun Greek brings together two of Galveston's favorite food traditions in one welcoming local restaurant.

• Kritikos Grill is a family-owned Seawall restaurant for Greek cuisine and seafood. The owners are friends of my family, and it is a place I'm happy to recommend.

For a Special Dinner

Rudy & Paco Restaurant and Bar is the place on this list for a memorable dinner. If you want to dress up, enjoy attentive service, and make your pre-cruise evening feel like part of the vacation, this is the reservation to make.

Places I Would Skip

For a locally owned dining experience, I would pass on Landry's Seafood House, Fisherman's Wharf, and Willie G's Seafood & Steaks. They are Landry's, Inc. restaurants, and while they were once great choices, I do not think their quality matches the local restaurants above anymore.

My Simple Pre-Cruise Dining Plan

Start with Sunflower, ShyKatz, or MOD Coffeehouse in the morning. For a casual lunch or dinner, go to Shrimp 'N Stuff, Katie's, Little Daddy's, The Spot, Cajun Greek, or Kritikos. Reserve Rudy & Paco or BLVD. Seafood when you want a special last night on the island. The best part is that, because Galveston is compact, these places are an easy drive or rideshare from the cruise port.
