Best Hotels Near the Galveston Cruise Terminal
A Galveston local's favorite hotels for a pre-cruise stay, from the two best walkable bases near the port to historic B&Bs and beachfront resorts.
For a Galveston cruise, I strongly recommend arriving the day before you sail. It removes the pressure of a same-day drive, gives you an evening on the island, and lets you board rested. I'm Ben, the owner of Ben's Travel, and I'm from Galveston—so take it from me: these are my favorite places to stay.
My Two Picks for a Walkable Port Stay
Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21 and The Tremont House, Galveston, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel are the two hotels I recommend when you want to make the most of a walkable pre-cruise stay near the historic waterfront. They cost more than many island hotels, but I think the location earns it. You can spend the evening walking to excellent restaurants, shops, galleries, and attractions around Pier 21 and The Strand instead of treating Galveston as just a place to sleep before embarkation.
Harbor House is right on the harbor at Pier 21, while The Tremont House is in a beautifully restored historic building a few blocks into the Strand Historic District. Both are well placed for the central cruise terminals, but confirm your assigned terminal before booking: Galveston's cruise terminals are spread along Harborside Drive, and a walk that is easy with a carry-on may not be practical with several bags.
Historic Bed-and-Breakfasts
Galveston has a wonderful collection of bed-and-breakfasts in historic homes, many within a few miles of the port. They are an especially good fit for travelers who want a more personal stay and a real sense of the island's historic neighborhoods. Three standouts are Sugar's Inn, The Oleander Hotel, and The 1890 Freeman House.
Favorite Beachfront and Resort Hotels
Want more of a resort or beach stay? Galveston is compact—the island runs about 27 miles long but is only a few miles wide—so these properties are still an easy rideshare or drive from the port:
Grand Galvez Resort, Autograph Collection — the island's iconic historic beachfront resort.
The San Luis Resort, Spa and Conference Center — a full-service Seawall resort with a polished, vacation-first feel.
Hilton Galveston Island Resort — a dependable beachfront option opposite the convention center.
Holiday Inn Resort Galveston-On The Beach by IHG — a relaxed Seawall choice with beach access nearby.
These hotels are not walkable to the port, but they are ideal if you want beach time, a pool, or a resort-style evening before your cruise. Plan on a short ride to the terminal on embarkation morning. Coordinate with the hotel as most provide shuttle service.
Before You Book
Check your terminal and transportation plan. The Port of Galveston uses multiple cruise terminals, so confirm the terminal on your cruise documents and arrange parking, a rideshare, or a hotel transfer directly with the property. Do not assume a hotel offers a cruise shuttle or a park-and-cruise package; availability and terms change, so confirm the details before reserving. Book early. Weekend sailings, holidays, and busy beach-season dates can fill hotels quickly. If Harbor House or The Tremont House is on your wish list, reserve as soon as your cruise is set.
