Getting to the Galveston cruise terminals is straightforward for most travelers, but the details matter. Whether you're driving from across Texas, flying into Houston, or taking a shuttle, here's everything you need to know about reaching the port smoothly and affordably.

Driving to Galveston (Most Common Option)

From Houston (45–60 minutes): Take I-45 South from downtown Houston directly onto Galveston Island, where it becomes Broadway/Avenue J. Turn onto Harborside Drive (TX-275, Exit 1C), which runs parallel to Broadway and leads directly to all four cruise terminals. Heading south on Harborside Drive you'll reach Terminal 10 (Royal Caribbean) and Terminal 16 (MSC, Norwegian) first, then Terminal 25 (Carnival) and Terminal 28 (Disney) a few minutes further on. The critical caveat: traffic on I-45 during Friday and Saturday mornings can be brutal. A normal 45-minute drive can easily stretch to 90 minutes or longer. If you're driving on cruise departure day, leave at least two hours earlier than your GPS suggests.

From Dallas (4.5 hours): I-45 South the entire way. Plan for stops and allow extra time if traveling midday on Fridays when weekend cruisers are headed to Galveston.

From San Antonio (4 hours): Take I-10 East to Houston, then I-45 South to Galveston.

From Austin (3.5–4 hours): Take TX-71 East to I-10 East toward Houston, then I-45 South to Galveston. (US-290 East is a reasonable alternate if you're starting from north Austin, though it runs through more small towns.) Note that I-35 does not connect Austin to Houston—it runs north–south toward Dallas and San Antonio instead.

Parking at the port: On-site garage parking at the cruise terminals is available for $15–20 per day. Book in advance online through the Port of Galveston Wharves website—it's cheaper than paying at the gate and guarantees a spot. Off-site parking with shuttle service (operated by companies like EZcruise Parking, Park N Cruise, and Lighthouse Parking) costs roughly $11–15 per day and is a solid budget option.

Shuttle and Transfer Services from Houston Airports

Shared shuttle services like Galveston Limo, Royal Galveston Shuttle, and Galveston Express operate regular routes. Cost: $35–55 per person one-way for a shared shuttle. Both Houston airports (IAH and HOU) have major rental car companies. Rental cars are an option if you want flexibility and plan to explore Galveston before your cruise or after disembarkation. If you rent a car from a Houston airport and drop it off in Galveston, expect a one-way/different-location fee—in Texas this commonly adds $100 or more to the rental. Enterprise has a Galveston branch (5919 Broadway St), but it doesn't shuttle to or from the cruise terminals, so budget for a taxi or rideshare for that last leg.

Once You're in Galveston: Getting Around
